above: Felt’s 2007 F-75. Carbon seatstays and shimano Ultegra 10-speed drivetrain for just $1,399.
It’s that time again: ROBOCOP SMOOTHIE (our very own house band) is playing Connolly’s Irish Pub (Downtown Greenville) again this Friday at 10:00pm, so swing by and enjoy what is sure to be another awesome show.
Also, you might want to get an early start with a free membership to a new great website specifically designed for athletes like us (triathletes, cyclists, mountain bikers, etc.). The site’s focus is to provide athletes with a place to find training partners, post photos and videos of themselves, discuss their favorite sport, find coaches, show off, and even find sponsors.
The site is currently in its Beta phase (in development), but its soft launch has already attracted about 150 athletes just from word-of-mouth alone, and is sure to drawn in thousands by this summer. (Wait ’till you see this thing once it isn’t in Beta anymore!) It’s going to be huge.
For those of you keeping score, the site was dreamed up by Graham Fizer (one of the cooler Clemson grads I’ve met so far), and is being developed by the brilliant folks at Orange Coat, which is probably the best website design studio on the East coast… of the Galaxy.
Go check it out, create a profile (it takes just seconds), and start seeing out who’s there already. I don’t mean to seem preachy or whatever, but you really need to join and help us start an online cycling and triathlon community for SC. (It may not seem important now, but it’ll come in handy this spring. Just you wait.)
Here’s what you do:
- Clear your schedulefor the next couple of minutes.
- Go to www.athletefocus.com and sign up.
Thanks in advance, and if we don’t see you at the store in the next two days, we’ll see you at Connolly’s Friday… or at any of the rides this weekend.

so here is a hypothetical, why would I (as a greenville resident and avid cyclist) join a local cycling club, for example, the greenville spinners. as i tossed this question out to my compatriots today at work neither i or anyone else could not come up with a sufficient answer. i donate to cycling funds and charities and have supported the LAF, Bikes Belong, and other cycling and athletic organizations over the years but truly wonder what my local cycling club dollars would go towards that i don’t already spend them on myself. now part of this has to do with a general reluctance to join a club but its not really about a dollar figure, the inclusion/exclusion factor of being part of a local cycling club has zero appeal and in fact is kind of a turn off. i don’t really like the jersey colors and most of the cyclists i know who are members leave a kind of sour taste in my mouth (some people just can’t/won’t wave when they pass you in cleveland park for any reason even people i know). so with a text only website with zero updating to count on why would i go there or reference anyone i know to do the same. with cancelled charity drives why would i put in a buck towards something that may not materialize. with a junky attitude towards non-members why would i make the effort to come “into the fold” when i’m on the outside looking in? provide me with guidance because i can’t seem to see the light

Hey Beluga, This might be a little off topic, but since you brought up the Spinners, I want to respond. I am a member of the Spinners and I can tell you that the club has done some great things for the city of Greenville. The advocacy group, of which I was a very small part, is responsible for the bike lanes on River/ Richardson/ Townes and for the city’s proposed future bike lane plans. Members of the club give away helmets to kids and volunteer to promote cycling at events all around town. The experience that you had with a few cyclists in Cleveland Park is unfortunate, but those particular individuals who don’t wave back do not represent the club as a whole. You mentioned the team jerseys, but not everyone in the club is a racer; in fact many of the club members probably never wear lyrca at all. Come to a meeting and you will see that there are some nice people in the club who represent every facet of cycling. You don’t have to join to come meet people and see what you think.
By the way, I am a LAB member as well, but I think that I get a better ROI on my Spinners and PCC memberships. I can see real changes locally that those groups have played a huge part in.

james thanks for your comment i have been to the sparsely populated meeting and donated helmets from the shop i work at to their donation drive as well as others. i’m pretty sure the majority of cyclist who are members probably don’t go to meetings, i’m also sure the majority probably aren’t real proud of the group as a whole. just my impression after living here for a year or so. as for the advocacy i know some of the town planning people and who drives that forth so the fact the spinners is involved is great but its a drop in the bucket…
